Star Rating
Star ratings are used to symbolize the overall quality, service and amenities available in a hotel. There are different criteria set within each country but the following should be considered reasonable and balanced.
All properties have en-suite facilities unless otherwise stated.
Star Rating general guideline for European hotels:
1 Star -
Very Basic accommodation with a limited range of facilities and services; many rooms will not have en-suite facilities. Usually very small independently owned properties.
2 Star -
Basic accommodation most rooms will have en-suite facilities and offer a wider range of services including food and drink.
3 Star -
Higher standard of services and facilities including larger public areas and bedrooms, a receptionist, room service, laundry. Well-equipped bedrooms, all with en-suite/private bathroom and a color TV. Room service may be available.
4 Star -
Accommodation offering superior comfort and quality; all bedrooms with en-suite bath, fitted overhead shower and WC. Spacious and well appointed public areas. More emphasis on food and drink. Room service for all meals and 24 hour drinks, refreshments and snacks usually available together with a dry cleaning service.
5 Star -
A spacious, luxurious establishment offering you the highest international quality of accommodation, facilities, services and cuisine. There will be a range of extra facilities.
Note that a small number of hotels are self-rating when it come to the allocation of Rating Stars. This can occur while they await a formal rating from the country tourist board.
Room Size
European Hotel rooms tend in many cases to be smaller than American Hotel Rooms. Also note that in the case of classic hotels, the rooms are fitted to the structure of existing buildings. This creates hotels rooms of character and results in a range of unique rooms in a single property. Note that if you do see a picture of a hotel room on a website that the room you receive when you check-in may in many cases differ from the photograph.
Room Configuration
In Europe the following normally applies:
Single room
Standard room with 1 single bed for 1 person. In some cases a guest will be allocated a Double Room for Single occupancy. Check the room description.
Double room
Standard room with 1 double bed for 2 people.
Twin room
Standard room with 2 beds for 2 people.
Double/Single Room
Standard room, which sleeps 3 people with 1 double bed for 2 people and 1 single bed for 1 person.
Triple room
Standard room, which sleeps 3 people. This may consist of either a twin or double with and extra single bed which may be a rollaway.
Leisure Centres
There is a growing trend in Irish hotels, especially country hotels to provide a Leisure Centre. Many of the properties listed on our site have a swimming pool or have arranged access to such facilities in the locality.
